Harry Potter has elevated many individuals to fame, granting them the power to sway opinions online. This includes J.K. Rowling, the author of the series, as well as actors like Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe, who starred in the films.
In recent times, Rowling has been quite outspoken about her views on the transgender community. She has made several statements that suggest she finds certain aspects of the discussion absurd, even sharing a link to a related article not long ago.
It appeared that Rowling was mocking the trans community when she posted an article titled: “Opinion: Creating a more equal post-COVID-19 world for people who menstruate.”
She followed up with a comment: “‘People who menstruate’. I’m pretty sure there used to be a term for those individuals. Can someone remind me? Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”
In response, the online community quickly took a stand, with both Watson and Radcliffe expressing their support for the transgender community.
Radcliffe, in particular, issued an apology to the LGBTQ+ community, expressing regret for any ‘pain’ that may have been inflicted.
Watson, who has a significant number of trans followers, stated that she and many others around the globe see, respect, and love them for who they are.
This isn’t the first time Rowling has stirred controversy that has adversely impacted the trans community. In a post on X, she referred to pediatrician Dr. Hilary Cass’ report as ‘the most robust review of the medical evidence for transitioning children that’s ever been conducted.’
Rowling later remarked that the research indicated ‘children have been irreparably harmed’. She continued by stating, “It’s not just medical professionals who are involved; thousands are complicit, including celebrity advocates, uncritical media, and opportunistic corporations.”
In response to her post, one commenter noted: “I’m just waiting for Dan and Emma to publicly apologize to you… confident that you’ll forgive them…”
Rally’s reply caught many off guard. She stated, “That’s not a guarantee, I’m afraid. Celebrities who aligned themselves with a movement aimed at undermining women’s hard-fought rights and who promoted the transitioning of minors should direct their apologies to the traumatized detransitioners and the vulnerable women who depend on single-sex spaces.”
It will be fascinating to see how this unfolds next.
