A group of LEGO aficionados recently traveled to BrickWorld Chicago, only to have one member’s return trip turn into an unexpected adventure at the airport. The story, shared by a member of the Bearded Builders Guild and the BrickSlopes community, highlights the lengths that dedicated LEGO fans will go to when it comes to their brick collections – and the unexpected consequences of trying to bring them home.
After a visit to a downtown LEGO store, where the group was delighted to find a well-stocked Pick-A-Brick (PAB) wall, they took advantage of a store policy allowing them to purchase bricks at a discount. However, there was a catch: since none of them had brought the usual refillable cups, the store provided paper bags, taping them up carefully to avoid any spillage. One member ended up with around 60 pounds of LEGO bricks, packed tightly in his duffle bag.
Determined not to pay for checked luggage, the traveler decided to carry on both his laptop bag and the duffle packed with LEGO bricks. But things took an unexpected turn when he reached airport security. As his bag passed through the scanner, it was flagged for additional inspection, much to his surprise.
The TSA agent, with a smirk on his face, inquired about the bag’s contents. “LEGO,” the traveler replied confidently, assuming the matter would be quickly resolved. Instead, the agent informed him that each of the individually wrapped LEGO bags would need to be opened for further inspection.
Despite the hassle, the TSA agent maintained a good sense of humor, even asking, “Who told you this was a good way to bring LEGO through security?” The traveler, realizing his oversight, could only laugh along. As the inspection proceeded, the traveler felt a pang of sympathy for the increasingly impatient line of fellow passengers behind him.
In the end, while the screening process caused a brief delay, the encounter was lighthearted, with both parties sharing a laugh over the unusual situation. As for the traveler? Despite the minor inconvenience, he concluded with no regrets, humorously noting that he would “100% do it again.”
