WASHINGTON, D.C. — A single television interview on Sunday morning sent a wave of anxiety rippling across the United States, reigniting a debate that most Americans believed belonged to a different era. When White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt appeared on Fox Business’s Sunday Morning Futures on March 8, 2026, host Maria Bartiromo put to her directly the question that millions of parents had been asking since U.S. and Israeli military operations against Iran began on February 28: Could American civilians be forced to fight?
“Mothers out there are worried that we’re going to have a draft, that they’re going to see their sons and daughters get involved in this,” Bartiromo said. “What do you want to say about the president’s plans for troops on the ground?”
Leavitt’s answer did not provide the reassurance many were hoping for.

The backdrop to all of this is a conflict that has already cost American lives. Since U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran began on February 28, eight American military personnel have died. Four service members — Sgt. Declan J. Coady, Sgt. 1st Class Noah L. Tietjens, Sgt. 1st Class Nicole Amor, and Capt. Cody Khork — were killed on March 1, 2026, at the Port of Shuaiba, Kuwait, during a drone attack.
How the U.S. Draft Actually Works: A Step-by-Step Explainer
For the overwhelming majority of Americans under the age of 50, a military draft is a historical concept — something from Vietnam-era newsreels or their grandparents’ stories. But the legal and administrative framework for conscription remains fully in place today, and understanding how it works has never been more relevant.
The Selective Service System
The Selective Service is a government bureau separate from the Defense Department. Its mission is to register men and maintain a system that, when authorized by the President and Congress, rapidly provides personnel in a fair and equitable manner while managing an alternative service program for conscientious objectors. Basically, this means that if we ever have a national emergency or war that the all-volunteer military cannot adequately support, Congress and the president can reinstate the draft and require male citizens to serve in the military.
The United States has not had a draft since 1973. Congress and the president would have to authorize one. In the case of a national emergency, the Selective Service would follow a specific process to draft eligible young men.
Who Must Register — Right Now
