LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy has finally arrived and here are four surprises fans can expect from the all-new animated special.
Fans of a galaxy far, far away have their weekend viewing sorted out thanks to a new animated special that’s now airing on Disney+. The four-piece LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy is available for all subscribers to the streaming service and not only features an all-star cast, but also an original take on the existing Star Wars universe.
The good news is that each part of the LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy special is packed with unique twists on familiar characters, ships, planets and events, so here are five surprises we spotted. *Spoiler warning*
There’s more to Jedi Bob than meets the eye
Not only does LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy include fan-favourite Jedi Bob as one of the main characters, but there are also plenty of revelations regarding the mythic minifigure.
“Jedi Bob’s full name is actually Bobarian AFOL,” explained Bobby Moynihan, the actor behind the character’s voice, in recent interview with Brick Fanatics. “I did actually know about Jedi Bob’s backstory before the project came about, as I had the minifigure from the original set!”
“It ultimately turns out that [Jedi Bob] comes from sort of an earlier version of the LEGO Star Wars galaxy,” said co-showrunner and co-writer, Dan Hernandez, “which is, of course, a nod to the actual history of this partnership.”
Darth Jar Jar is The Phantom Menace
One of the many highlights of LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy is seeing familiar faces in a new light. That includes the appearance of Darth Jar Jar, a dark take on Ahmed Best’s Gungan, with the actor retuning to reprise his role.
In one scene in the special, Darth Jar Jar attacks Sig Greebling’s band of heroes in a trash compactor, referring to himself as being ‘The Phantom Menace.’ Not only is that a nod to the character’s debut in Episode I, but it also hints at what Dan Hernandez refers to as a scarier take on the friendly Gungan.
Mark Hamill isn’t the only surprise cameo voice
When it comes to voice actors in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, the show’s creators aimed as high as they possibly could. “[Mark Hamill] coming back as Luke Skywalker – we wrote that with optimism,” said Dan. “We didn’t know how likely it was to get him, but we tried, and we did it. He read our script and said that we really understand Star Wars. That was the greatest compliment we’ve ever received in our career!
I can’t believe Ahmed Best recorded as Jar Jar and Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Kelly Marie-Tran (Darth Rose Tico), Naomi Ackie (Jedi Jannah)… you know, all of these people coming back.”
Fans will also get to meet the villainous Darth Rey, Darth Nubs, Darth Kit Fisto and other Sith, as well as hilarious heroes such as Jedi Palpatine, Jedi Jabba the Hutt, Jedi Count Dooku and many more.
There might be future LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy stories
While this is pure speculation on our part, the final episode of LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy does appear to leave the door open for more potential stories set in the new brick-based timeline.
That’s also something that the creators of the special would seem to want to see too. “I hope Jedi Bob lives forever,” said Bobby Moynihan. “I think fans are really gonna love it. I think it’s going to be a blast, and fans will really enjoy it. And write letters, write physical letters to anyone, to your local congressman, and tell them that Jedi Bob should be in live-action!”
