LEGO Technic and McLaren continue to push the boundary of LEGO and engineering with the unveiling of a life-size McLaren P1, constructed out of 342,817-pieces of Technic elements.
This insane feat of engineering looked to mimic the the legendary McLaren P1, which also saw it debut as 42172 McLaren P1 earlier this year.
23 specialists from design, engineering and building from the LEGO group and McLaren Automotive came together to build this car, which is powered by an electric motor and EV battery, and boasts fully functional steering, making it the first LEGO big build ever capable of steering and taking on tricky racetrack corners.
The big build process came to life with 23 specialists from design, engineering and building from the LEGO group and McLaren Automotive, with 8,344 hours of development and construction and requiring 393 different types of LEGO Technic elements.
It’s especially cool when you see the McLaren P1’s frame, which showcases just what’s possible with LEGO Technic.
And to really put this car through its paces, McLaren F1 Driver, Lando Norris was tasked with driving the Technic McLaren P1 through the twists and turns of the 5.891km (3.66 miles) Silverstone Circuit track. It’s pretty zippy too, achieving speeds of up to 50-60 km/h!
It’s quite impressive and a huge step up from the last time the LEGO Technic team attempted a similar feat with the Bugatti Chiron.
