The Sussexes’ Controversial Christmas Card: A Departure from Tradition
On Wednesday, Harry and Meghan continued their tradition of releasing an “official” Christmas card. This year, it was sent as a collage via email to followers and subscribers of their Archewell Foundation.
The card featured various images from their year together, including moments from their humanitarian trips overseas. One standout image showed their children running towards them, captured from behind.
The accompanying message read:
“On behalf of the office of Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, we wish you a very happy holiday season, and a joyful new year.”
A New Layout Sparks Online Debate
The Sussexes’ decision to send a collage-style card caused a stir on social media. Fans and critics alike compared it to the more traditional royal Christmas portraits of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
Grant Harrold, a former butler to King Charles III, remarked:
“A traditional royal Christmas card is normally just a photograph. Harry and Meghan’s card is very different. It’s more of a montage, which isn’t typically royal.”
This unique layout drew mixed reactions, with some praising the creativity and others criticizing the departure from royal norms.
William and Kate Respond with Silence, Then Subtlety
The Prince and Princess of Wales, often seen as being “at odds” with the Sussexes since their royal exit, waited until December 25 to share their Christmas portraits. In keeping with tradition, their cards featured a single image of their family, showcasing their three children: George, Charlotte, and Louis.
Rather than addressing the card debate directly, William and Kate shared an unrelated image on Twitter and Instagram. Their understated approach added to the ongoing contrast between the two couples’ public personas.
Social Media Reactions Highlight the Divide
As expected, social media exploded with reactions to both Christmas cards. Fans of Harry and Meghan appreciated the modern twist, while supporters of William and Kate praised the elegance of their traditional approach.
The card debate reignited discussions about royal customs and the evolving image of the monarchy in the 21st century. Some users criticized the Sussexes’ card for being “too informal,” while others commended its creativity and relatability.
A Continuing Tale of Two Royal Households
The contrasting Christmas cards reflect the growing divergence between the Sussexes and the Waleses. Harry and Meghan continue to break away from tradition, appealing to a more modern audience. Meanwhile, William and Kate remain committed to the traditions that define their roles within the monarchy.
This subtle yet powerful Christmas card exchange is yet another chapter in the evolving narrative of Britain’s most talked-about royal families.
